Polytech Secures Place in Pilot BRICS Universities Ranking
A study evaluates the university’s educational, research and social engagement activities
The Moscow International Ranking “Three Missions of the University” website has published the second international list of the best universities from BRICS countries. This year the number of participating institutions increased significantly: the list includes 750 universities from Russia, China, Brazil, Egypt, India, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, South Africa, Indonesia, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan. The ranking features 169 Russian universities, including Samara Polytechnic. Our university maintained its positions from last year and ranks 104–124 in the national segment of the study, while placing 451–500 in the global listing.
To assess BRICS universities, the Association of Ranking Makers (the ranking operator) applied the approaches used for the global “Three Missions of the University” list. Evaluation was carried out using 17 criteria that characterize a university’s activities across three areas — education, research and engagement with society. An important indicator is the number of joint scientific publications with partners from BRICS countries. The ranking is based on verifiable objective indicators and does not use subjective expert assessments.
According to the compilers, the need for a new ranking is driven by the low representation of BRICS countries in existing international rankings. At the same time, this is a large and promising education market.
Inclusion in the ranking is of great interest for the Polytechnic. Our university has been developing partnership ties in the Middle East and South America for several years. Students from China, Brazil, Egypt, India, Iran and Saudi Arabia attend our university’s pre-university preparatory programs, receive higher education here and study in postgraduate programs. Together with experts from Iranian and Chinese universities, our researchers collaborate on educational, engineering and scientific projects in the fields of ecology, chemistry, oil and gas, energy and information technology.
